Brig is 9. Only 9. Yeah. I know. He’s that good! Jasie’s thinking he could be a model. I think he ABSOLUTELY is one! Poses are not for him. He’s a natural. Ask him to look one way or another and he’s picture perfect. And yes, he’s only 9. Goodness. Sorry for repeating that over and over again. HAHA! We can totally forget that he’s just but 9. But a few more minutes into the shoot and we know that he really is just a kid.

Children, no matter how they pose or shoot with us, is the best anti-aging antidote we could ever have. They absolutely crack us up.

Unexpectedly, Brig seemed to love having his photos taken. You would not have known just talking to him. But glad though that when we started, he really got into his groove right away. Absolutely loved the lighting during this morning shoot that we did. Creamy and perfectly delicioso.

Ian and Bethany : The First Look!

It was a beautiful day for a wedding. We got blue skies and it would have been perfect if the sun wasn’t pissed. It was like 200 degrees outside!! Yeah, I’m exaggerating but it sure felt like it was! We were drenched! We started at 3pm for the first look and the lighting was pretty harsh but we worked with it like we always do and I think they came out soooo awesome! Just like Bethany’s bridal session, we had a difficult time picking the images for this blog that we decided to have a separate entry for the first look! So here you go.. enjoy!

Q & A : Lens Questions

Q : This question is from Shaleena.

Hi.. I am a new Michigan based Photographer. I was looking at your work and I love
it. I was looking into buying a micro lens..what type do you use?? Looking at your
pics, it looks like you use a 50 mm lens for portraits.. what is your typicla lens
for weddings??

Sorry for all the questions, but I love photography and I am trying to grow my
business and I really want great equipment.. I shoot with Canon.. do you?

A : Yes, we shoot with Canon. We use canon 5d’s, 30d and 7d. We are not sure about a micro lens ? But for macro lens, we use Canon 100 mm 2.8. And our typical lens for weddings are Canon 70-200 2.8 IS, Canon 16-35 2.8, Canon 135 2.0, Sigma 12-24 4.5, Canon 50mm 1.4 , Canon 24-70 2.8 .

We love using the 50mm 1.4 for portraits and focus mostly on the eyes. But this varies depending on the feel that we want to see in the image. We use our other lenses too for portrait work.

Q : This question is from one of our dearest friends who happen to be just one amazing photographer as well ! Portia =)

One more quick question. I was looking into getting a new lens to do portrait shots. I had a prime lens in mind. I already have a 70-200mm but it’s really too big and heavy and requires a steady hand to get sharp shots.

What I really want is to get a good bokeh and if it could serve as both a portrait and macro that’s ideal. If I should just stick to a non-macro prime lens, then so be it.

A : That would be ideal to get a multi purpose lens. But we noticed that Canon really builds a particular lens for some particular shots. So we bought a macro lens Canon 100 2.8 and a portrait lens. We use mostly Canon 50mm 1.4. We would love to get the L lens Canon 50mm 1.2 but it’s a little bit too pricey for us at the moment with the .2 increase on the bokeh. So go for the one you were looking at Canon 50mm 1.4. Pretty sure you’d love it. And even if you don’t, it’s just about $350.00. So not too bad. And then get another for your macro lens. But then if you find one that works well for you, let us know! We’d like to check it out.

Bethany : Salt Lake City Utah Bridals

Artists like to be inspired. We agree. You usually give your best when you are. Others look for it coz it could surely be elusive. It’s normal. If there’s a writer’s block, I’m sure there is a creativity block. So you go out to find that kaleidoscope of color or an explosion of texture wherever you might find it. Could be in museums, could be in a park, could be in a city, could be in the internet, could be in other people’s blogs, but wherever it is, you leave the safety of your neutrals and your whites. And you take residence in the fray.

INSPIRATION. We didn’t have to go too far. We just needed to see Bethany, and we are inspired. We needed nothing else. The way the light hits her skin makes her literally glow. That blend of beauty and light made everything so surreal. Feathers and pearls. Time just flew. We didn’t even realize that we have been taking photos as much as we have. More than her, we absolutely enjoyed ourselves doing this shoot.

We hope you enjoy the images as much as we have. This series is one of the hardest ones we had to trim down.

Angel : Roy Utah Portraits

We came over at Jasie’s place where Angel is getting her hair and makeup done. At that time, we have already drove around for about 20 minutes looking for a nice location. when we got there, we realized that we could absolutely just use their trampoline for some amazing shots! Their backyard has the most gorgeous views of the Wasatch mountains. With the trampoline and Angel jumping, we could get the vertical height that we need and get Angel against the big blue sky and get the majestic mountains behind. Result? PHENOMENAL =)

We did this pretty quick before we moved on to the next photos. After all, trampoline is a huge workout. Enjoy the images ! =)

Kelley and Travis : Layton Utah Engagement Portraits

THANK YOU. Seriously, this absurdly short phrase is not enough to express how much grateful we are and how much we appreciate the simple invitation of people we have never met in our lives to photograph and capture nothing less than their raw emotion — LOVE. We are always enamored when people thank us but really it’s the other way around. We are always in awe of the fact that people actually let us translate their love into our images. You guys inspire us. And here’s another series of images that held us in tenterhooks as their love splashed all over our silver screens (ok, we get carried away, just our monitors. haha!) .

Travis and Kelley are sooooooo much fun when we started the shoot. Pretty laid back just as we are. All they wanted are trees in their background. We of course always oblige. And then some. Ants made their way all over Kelley’s jeans. Yeah, just her. Travis, were you wearing ant repellant? HAHA! And then, we just had to go to Antelope Island for their engagement photos. And are we glad we’re not kicked out this time out of our location. We actually almost got locked in. Yikes! The state park closes at 9:30 and thank heavens that dutiful park ranger was late in his roamings and let us poor scaredy cats out of that steely gate! WHEW ! Not a lot would understand when we say it was raining bugs that night! LITERALLY! And our poor Sequoia was covered with the most eekiest gooiest bug intestines and brains! Gross ? Add stinker to that equation and yes, we are scared to get locked in. But just as happy to know we got phenomenal images of Travis and Kelley.

Ericka Martin : Midvale Utah Senior Portraits

We absolutely had no idea that Ericka and her family are at Midvale. If we knew about that, we would have just met them at Salt Lake City. By the time I called them, they have already long past the Salt lake City and are already heading our way out here. But we absolutely think though that it was worth it. Mountains were pretty with their wildflowers running rampant all over the place. The sky was blue and there couldn’t be more yummier time than when we met up.

Ericka is sporting a perfect tan. With her high cheekbones and her golden skin, we are ready to start the shoot! It is with added pleasure that we were able to shoot with Arnee before he went to Europe. We say 2 are better than 1. But 3 ? Let’s rock it!

They tell us that they have brought some suitcases with them and it kinda was a symbol of their transition from Illinois to Utah and wanted to take some with Ericka’s photos. First thing we ask ? What color is it? HOT PINK! Absolutely baby ! We like colors and pink no less, it was perfect.

Brandon and Chelsea : Melbourne Florida Wedding Photographer

Ritrato’s first beach wedding and it did not disappoint! Sunny Florida welcomed us with warm weather, blue skies and sumptuous seafood! It is a paradise for us islanders who don’t really get to see the ocean as much as we want to anymore. But don’t get us wrong, Utah is home and we love the life elevated!

We’ve been stoked to cover this wedding since the time Brandon and Chelsea decided to book us. The day has finally come and what a beautiful celebration of two people in love and God being the center of it all! We only hope that we are able to tell this love story through our images. So without further ado, here are some of the photos we’ve captured that day.
